* ECM RESET MEMORY FUNCTION
Whenever an automatic transmission is replaced, overhauled or individual components are replaced, use this procedure to clear Engine Control Module (ECM, SAE term: Powertrain Control Module, PCM) “Learned Values” to prevent subsequent driveability complaints, applies to: 2000 - 2003 model year ECHO and Celica vehicles, 2001 - 2003 model year Highlander and RAV4 vehicles, 2002 - 2003 model year Camry vehicles, 2002 - 2003 model year Solara vehicles with 2AZ engine, 2003 model year Matrix vehicles, 2004 model year Sienna vehicles, 2000 model year Highlander and RAV4 vehicles, 2000 - 2001 model year Camry vehicles, 2000 - 2001 model year Solara vehicles with 5S engine, 2000 - 2003 model year Solara vehicles with 1MZ engine, 2000 - 2003 model year 4Runner, Avalon, Corolla, Land Cruiser and Sienna vehicles, 2000 - 2003 model year Tacoma and Tacoma Pre-Runner vehicles, 2000 - 2003 model year Tundra vehicles, 2001 - 2003 model year Sequoia vehicles.
* O2S TEST RESULTS (MODE 05)
This Service Bulletin contains Oxygen Sensor (O2S) Monitor threshold values for all models from 1996 to 2003 and some 2004 models. Starting in 2004, the O2S Monitor threshold values can be found in the repair manual. These values are used when analyzing the O2S test results to determine the O2S condition, applies to: All 1996 - 2003 model year Toyota vehicles, 2004 model year Corolla, ECHO, Matrix and Sienna vehicles, 2004 model year Scion xA and xB vehicles.
* M.I.L. “ON” P0300, P030#
Under certain driving conditions, some 2000 model year Celica GTS vehicles (2ZZ-GE engine) may exhibit M.I.L. “ON” with DTC P0300 (Random Misfire) and/or P030# (Single Cylinder Misfire). The Engine Control Module (ECM) logic and fuel injectors have been modified to correct this condition, applies to: 2000 model year Celica GTS vehicles with 2ZZ-GE engine.
* READINESS MONITOR DRIVE PATTERNS
The On-Board Diagnostic (OBDII) system is designed to monitor the performance of emission-related components and report any detected abnormalities in the form of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Since the various components need to be monitored during different driving conditions, the OBDII system is designed to run separate monitoring programs called Readiness Monitors. Many state Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) programs require that vehicles complete their Readiness Monitors prior to beginning an emissions test, applies to: All 1996 - 2002 model year Toyota vehicles, with engine: Echo (1NZ-FE), MR2 (1ZZ-FE), Tercel (5E-FE), Paseo (5E-FE), Corolla (7A-FE, 1ZZ-FE), Celica (7A-FE, 5S-FE, 1ZZ-FE, 2ZZ-GE), Camry (5S-FE, 1MZ-FE), Solara (5S-FE, 1MZ-FE), Avalon (1MZ-FE), RAV4 (3S-FE), Sienna (1MZ-FE), Supra (2JZ-GE, 2JZ-GTE), Tacoma (2RZ-FE, 3RZ-FE, 5VZ-FE), Previa (2TZ-FZE), 4Runner (3RZ-FE, 5VZ-FE), Land Cruiser (1FZ-FE), Prius (1NZ-FXE), T100 (3RZ-FE, 5VZ-FE).
* SULFUR ODOR FROM EXHAUST
Some owners of Toyota vehicles may experience a sulfur-like or “rotten egg” odor from the exhaust system. Sulfur is a natural component of crude oil from which gasoline is refined and the amount of sulfur can be decreased through the refining process. The amount of sulfur in fuel sold in California is regulated, however gasoline sold in other states can have substantially higher sulfur content. Sulfur content also varies considerably between gasoline brands and locations.
* EVAP SYSTEM OPERATION INFORMATION
This service bulletin provides supplemental information regarding the system design, operation, and diagnostics of the Early Type (Non-Intrusive) and Late Type (Intrusive) EVAP Systems found on 1996 model year and later OBD II equipped vehicles.
* GENERAL MAINTENANCE TIP
To help prevent unnecessary complications during the oil fill process, no undue load should be placed on the oil baffle attached to the inside of the valve cover (see illustration). This baffle is designed to deflect oil and should not be used to support the weight of heavy oil fill devices. These devices can place stress on the baffle, and bend or break it during the oil fill process.
* M.I.L. “ON” DTC P1349 - VVTi ACTUATOR
Under certain conditions customers may experience a MIL “ON” condition with DTC P1349 indicating a variable valve timing (VVTi) malfunction. In some cases, the cause of this DTC may be the VVTi actuator. Use the procedures in this bulletin to verify the operation of the actuator, applies to: 2000 - 2002 model year Corolla, Celica, MR2 Spyder, and ECHO vehicles.
* REPAIR MANUAL CORRECTION: VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
Repair Manual corrections have been made to the Valve Clearance Adjustment procedures for the 2000 model year Celica GTS with the 2ZZ-GE engine to allow effective use of the Special Service Tool.
* VVTLi - INTERMITTENT VARIABLE LIFT OPERATION
In some cases, owners of 2000 - 2002 model year Celica GTS vehicles equipped with the 2ZZ-GE engine may complain of an intermittent slight loss of power and/or variable lift function at engine speeds over 6,000 rpm under high load. This can be caused if the bolt securing the rocker shaft separates, allowing the shaft to rotate in its bore. This rotation, when it occurs, can cause misalignment of the oil feed passages to the rocker shafts, resulting in a lack of variable lift operation and low power at higher engine rpm, applies to: 2000 - 2002 model year Celica GTS vehicles equipped with 2ZZ-GE engine.
* ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT/BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY NOISE
Some 1ZZ-FE and 2ZZ-GE engines may exhibit squealing and/or rattling noises emanating from the engine compartment during vehicle operation, especially during deceleration at slow speeds after cold soak. The Accessory Drive Belt and Belt Tensioner have been improved to correct this condition, applies to: 2000 - 2001 model year Celica GT/GTS and MR2 Spyder vehicles.

This reference manual of Toyota 1ZZ-FE engine has improved fuel economy without any special device by optimizing basic specifications and adopting new technologies to each component. With all the new technologies explained in this paper, the 1ZZ-FE has satisfactorily achieved the targets cited earlier, balancing performance, fuel economy, mass, compactness, and exhaust emissions at a high level. This will make it possible to meet market requirements worldwide. The Toyota 1ZZ-FE engine is a newly developed in-line 4-cylinder, 1.8-liter, DOHC 4-valve engine mounted in the new Corolla. Abounding in new technologies including the laser-clad valve seat, high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block, and the small-pitch chain drive DOHC, coupled with the fundamentally reviewed basic specifications, the new engine is compact and lightweight, offering high performance and good fuel economy. Anticipating even more stringent emission regulations in the future, in addition to the revision of the engine body, the layout of the exhaust system has been improved to enhance warm-up performance of the converter.
